how often should you eat bacon
by Renée S. Suen

Question by rue2lku: What is the thing William Butler Yeats wrote about the people of Ireland eating their Children?
I studied it a while back. Yeats wrote a satyrical address to the people of England that in order to solve the famine, poverty, and overpopulation in Ireland the Irish should eat their children. He went on to say that if they didn’t have the stomach for it the government should pass reforms that would benefit the Irish. I can’t for the life of me remember the title of it! Does anyone know the answer, or if I’m wrong and it’s not Yeats who was it?

Best answer:

Answer by tiandron
“A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift
“Swift goes to great lengths to support his argument, including a list of possible preparation styles for the children, and calculations showing the financial benefits of his suggestion. He uses methods of argument throughout his essay which lampoon then-prominent William Petty and the social engineering popular among followers of Francis Bacon. These lampoons include appealing to the authority of “a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London” and “the famous Psalmanazar, a native of the island Formosa” (who had already confessed to not being from Formosa in 1706). This essay is widely held to be one of the greatest examples of sustained irony in the history of the English language. Much of its shock value derives from the fact that the first portion of the essay describes the plight of starving beggars in Ireland, so that the reader is unprepared for the surprise of Swift’s solution when he states, “A young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee, or a ragoust.”[3]

Readers unacquainted with its reputation as a satirical work often do not immediately realize that Swift was not seriously proposing cannibalism and infanticide, nor would readers unfamiliar with the satires of Horace and Juvenal recognize that Swift’s essay follows the rules and structure of Latin satires.

The satirical element of the pamphlet is often only understood after the reader notes the allusions made by Swift to the attitudes of landlords, such as the following: “I grant this food may be somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for Landlords, who as they have already devoured most of the Parents, seem to have the best Title to the Children.” Swift extends the metaphor to get in a few jibes at England’s mistreatment of Ireland, noting that “For this kind of commodity will not bear exportation, and flesh being of too tender a consistence, to admit a long continuance in salt, although perhaps I could name a country, which would be glad to eat up our whole nation without it.”

Question by Austin: Could you just use bacon fat as a replacement for lard in recipes?
For that matter, is bacon fat basically like lard or butter? I’m not really sure..

Best answer:

Answer by DM
Depends on what you are making. My Auntie used to cook with it.
Lard comes two ways….fat from animals or fat from veggies.
Butter is from the milk of an animal.

I like to slather myself in bacon fat and scream LETS MAKE BREAKFAST at the top of my lungs while the wife punishes me with a hand held egg beater as a kind of foreplay. Is this ok? Do any of you do anything similar?

The formula for losing weight is not difficult – eat less and workout more often – the issues appear when we in reality try to put that into operation! There are lots of opportunities to fail in the real world don’t you think?! Disneyland style bacon wrapped asparagus?

By Bacon on May 18, 2013 in Questions

Question by purpleprincess: Disneyland style bacon wrapped asparagus?
Hello! Has anyone ever tried bacon wrapped asparagus from Disneyland? Well, I’m planning on making some tonight, but not too sure how they make it. Does anyone know? I know they serve it with a lemon wedge, but I’m not sure what they put on it to add that extra flavor. If anyone can give me a few pointers that would definitely help! Thanks!

Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds asparagus spears, trimmed 4 to 5 inches long tips
Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling
A few grinds black pepper
4 slices center cut bacon or pancetta
Chopped chives or scallions, optional garnish
Directions
Preheat oven, if using, to 400 degrees F.

Lightly coat asparagus spears in extra-virgin olive oil. Season the asparagus with black pepper. Take a quick count of the spear tips. Divide the total number by four. Gather that number of spears and use a slice of bacon to wrap the bundle and secure the spears together. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

To grill, place bundles on hot grill and cover. Cook 10 to 12 minutes until bacon is crisp and asparagus bundles are tender.

For oven preparation, place bundles on slotted broiler pan. Bake 12 minutes.
